Install Conklin foam and coatings on flat roofs

Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roofing systems are growing in demand due to their "green" energy-saving properties. The coatings which are sprayed over the spray-in-place foam insulation system are VOC compliant, durable, energy efficient, economical, and weatherproof to protect a new or existing building for years to come.

SPF chemically bonds itself to the existing roof surface, so no tear-off is required (saving you money, time and the environment). SPF is extremely light, adding very little weight load to the building. It provides a seamless, water-tight design that withstands the toughest weather conditions and harshest temperature extremes. Foam and coating systems can be applied over built-up, single-ply, modified bitumen, metal, and other roof systems.

Before the foam can be applied, the roof must be cleared of dirt and debris, and all wet, moist or damaged and ponding water areas are repaired. Then the foam is sprayed on the roof to the specified thickness before the base coat is applied. Finally, the white reflective top coat is applied.

If a color other than white is desired, a show-coat can be applied as well. A variety of warranty options are available (up to 10 years) as well.

Roofing contractors - capitalize on the increasing demand for roof coatings

The demand for cool roofing (including roof coatings) is at an all-time high. Driven by national initiatives such as the Energy Star program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and various local efforts such as the California Energy Commission's Title 24 program, organizations are demanding that roofs do more than simply keep out water - they want rooftops to stay cool to reduce energy consumption. Government initiatives, tax incentives, and state and utility rebates are supporting this effort.

For years, building and facilities managers have specified white elastomeric roof coatings like those made by Conklin to protect roofs. White roofing solutions have grown exponentially in popularity over the last decade, with growth driven by the energy benefit that higher degrees of reflectivity can provide in specific environments, as well as the lower cost, faster installation schedule and high profitability benefits for the contractors trained to install them.

Studies by Oak Ridge National Laboratories and Lawrence Berkley National Laboratories have validated that in regions of high ambient temperatures with high solar irradiance, highly reflective coatings provide significant energy savings as a result of their cooling effect. These savings occur mostly during peak temperature conditions and when utilities charge peak fees.

In many regions of the country, using a reflective surface in the form of a roof coating can reduce the energy cost for a specific facility. But managers need to understand that many factors in addition to rooftop reflectance go in to a building's energy efficiency. Managers also must be careful when selecting a product - in regions without high temperatures and high solar irradiance, a coating's reflectivity might not even be a benefit, though its overall performance in protecting the roof from weather is always a benefit.

It is quite simple to evaluate the potential savings of a reflective coating. Numerous online calculators describe the potential energy savings of a reflective roof. The most popular calculator for roof energy savings is the U.S. Department of Energy's Roof Savings Calculator. This tool allows managers to compare the current roof with the benefits of a coated roof by plugging in building information, along with the reflectivity and emissivity factors of the proposed coatings.

Install metal roof restoration coating systems [+ video]

Watch below as Elmer's Roofing Service, a professional Conklin roofing contractor, installs a metal restoration coating system on the rusted metal roof of the All Brands Appliances building in Neenah, Wisconsin:

The roof area is 190 squares. The job was started in the beginning of October of 2010 in Wisconsin, which is somewhat pushing it temperature-wise for a roof coating installation (to find out why, please contact Elmer).

The crew begins by pressure-washing the roof with a cleaning agent, then they install the fabric-reinforced primer over the corrugated metal panels. Then they base coat the  horizontal and vertical seams of the panels and seal all the fasteners with caulk. Finally, the crew installed the white reflective top coat.

Elmer also gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the equipment they are using to give you a sense of what is involved with installing metal roof restoration systems (including a gas-powered Graco 733 pump which is hooked up to the drum on the truck which is filled with the Conklin roof coating material, and more).

Why recommend cool roofing to your customers?

Indoor Comfort
A hot roof acts like a radiator, increasing temperatures within and around the building, contributing to the “heat island” effect. Even when heavily insulated, flat and low-slope black roofs heat up to 170°F on a 95°F day, staying as much as 50 degrees hotter than ambient air temperatures even after dark. Indoors, elevated temperatures increase discomfort and risks to health while they put a greater burden on air conditioning systems.

Longer Roof Life
According to the Roof Coating Manufacturers Association, high temperatures can shorten the life of rubber, synthetic polymer, and especially asphalt roofing systems. The rate of degradation begins to accelerate even at a “modestly elevated” 140°F, causing “significant damage” and affecting both short- and long-term performance. Their rule of thumb for thermal aging is that service life is cut in half for every 18°F increase in temperature. Cool roof technology utilizing elastomeric coatings greatly reduces heat build-up where it starts.

Longer Lasting Protection
Elastomeric coatings from Conklin create a lasting white barrier to protect against bleed-through, especially important for asphalt roofing that sometimes migrates from the substrate to “bleed through” a traditional white coating.

Bolster Adhesion to Asphalt and Modified Bitumen
Before they have weathered, fresh asphalt and modified bitumen roofing materials normally repel an aqueous coating, making it difficult for the coating to stick to them. Conkin coatings provide excellent adherence to asphalt and modified bitumen surfaces, plus a high degree of bleed-through resistance.

Well Suited for EPDM
EPDM is an excellent roofing membrane: it’s extremely durable and waterproof, and it can withstand intense heat far better than asphalt materials. Its main drawback is that it is a black roofing material, making it an intrinsically “hot” roof. A white Conklin elastomeric roof coating would really round out EPDM’s benefits.

From Skepticism to Success - Les Williams opens up about Conklin Roofing Systems

Les Williams of TLC Pro Roofing in Tennessee freely admits that he had doubts about Conklin. “I was familiar with roofing because I had essentially roofed my way through school, doing shingle jobs. However, I never had much confidence in roof coatings, and Conklin coatings sounded too good to be true.”

Looking for a Change

The former civil engineer was in a transition period. He and his wife, Teresa, were looking for a new career opportunity when he discovered a Conklin ad placed by National Director Jerry Cruise. “Jerry and his wife Dorothy invited us to lunch and gave us a solid, credible presentation about Conklin – both the products and the opportunity.”

At that time, Teresa saw similarities between the Cruises and themselves. “Just as Les and I have always worked together, Jerry and Dorothy had worked together for years,” she says. “Also, they discovered Conklin at a time in their lives when they were struggling to find the right path for themselves and their family – and that’s exactly where we were when we met them. We were looking for a career change that would provide not only the opportunity to work together, but also the freedom to spend more time with our family – especially our grandbabies,” says Teresa.

But Les still wasn’t entirely convinced. “We asked him for the names of three Conklin contractors we could call for their perspectives,” says Les. “He referred us to Eddie Pack, Chad Hedrick, and Jeff Irwin. I called all three of them, and their stories were powerful as well.” Even so, the voice that ultimately convinced Les that Conklin was the right choice came from closer to home.

Reading the Signs

As Les spoke to Eddie, Chad, and Jeff, Teresa sat close by, having some daily devotional time. “When I hung up the phone,” Les remembers, “she told me that she’d felt confirmation from God that Conklin was the right thing for us.”

“I knew that Conklin was that opportunity, because I saw life coming back into Les as he spoke to the Conklin guys about roofing,” recalls Teresa. “Within 15 minutes, his demeanor changed; he was holding his head up, and speaking with confidence. I’ve always known that Les has a lot to offer the world, but at that moment I could see that he knew it, too. I looked at him and saw the man I married.”

“That,” Les smiles, “was what changed my initial skepticism to faith.”

That faith carried Les and Teresa through some challenging times with their new Conklin business. “We got off to a great start,” says Les. “We landed two good roofing jobs in a row, and earned the Bronze Destinations trip shortly after we started.” Soon, however, the jobs became smaller and money got tighter for the Williams family – and once again, Jerry’s strong mentoring changed their outlook (and their lives). “Jerry challenged us to step up our marketing strategies,” says Les. “We’d done some cold-calling, a couple of e-blasts, and some small trade shows, but we weren’t getting quality leads. After talking to Jerry, however, we took a leap of faith and sent out 10,000 direct-mail pieces.”

Taking that leap helped Les and Teresa land in a better place; not only did the mailing result in four substantial jobs, but their previous efforts began to bear fruit as well. “We received a call from a contractor who’d received one of our previous e-blasts,” says Les, “and that led to an 80,000 square-foot roof!”

Finding Their Way... Family-Style

Now, in their second year with Conklin, Les and Teresa have happily joined forces with their son Caleb in their Conklin roofing business. “One thing that really impressed us about Conklin,” says Teresa, “was going to our first National Convention in 2011, and seeing all the families in the business. I’m a firm believer in family, and I was really moved by seeing multiple generations of a family onstage together, receiving bonus checks.”

From the beginning, it was Les and Teresa’s dream to make their Conklin business a family business, too – “but we wanted it to be Caleb’s choice,” Teresa insists. When Caleb made the decision to join Les and Teresa in their roofing business, they traveled as a family to Conklin Business Seminar and Roof Systems Training. From that point on, says Teresa, “Caleb has been on fire! I am seeing the same confidence in him that I saw in Les when we were introduced to Conklin.”

Inspired by Caleb’s enthusiasm, Les and Teresa are working on increasing their sponsoring. They now have their sights set on becoming District Managers and members of the President’s Club. One goal they’ve already reached: they have met the volume requirement for the upcoming Master Contractor program! “The advice I’d give to anyone in this business,” they say, “is not to quit. When we had rough times, our Manager encouraged us to keep working the plan – and that has made all the difference.”
